Iga Swiatek Backs WTA Decision in Rybakina-Vukov Case
Iga Swiatek has voiced her support for the WTA’s decision in the controversy surrounding Elena Rybakina and her coach, Stefano Vukov, urging everyone to “respect the decision” made by the organization.
The WTA launched an investigation into allegations that Vukov verbally abused Rybakina and engaged in inappropriate behavior. Last week, the organization announced the case had been concluded, with the Croatian coach remaining banned.
During the Australian Open, Rybakina clarified that she was not the one who filed the complaint against her coach. Despite this, the 25-year-old Kazakh expressed disappointment with the WTA’s ruling. Meanwhile, many fans and prominent figures in the tennis community welcomed the decision to suspend Vukov.
While the WTA has not disclosed the length of Vukov’s suspension, The Athletic reported that he has been banned for one year.
Swiatek: “We Need to Trust the Process”
Swiatek, speaking on the matter, emphasized the importance of trusting the WTA’s decision-making process.
“I guess everybody needs to respect the decision because we need to trust that the whole process was made with the right rules,” Swiatek said. “Every personal trainer, every coach, they need to accept the code of conduct when they want to be on the WTA. So for sure, I hope the WTA is doing everything to make it a safe environment.”
While Swiatek refrained from making strong statements about Vukov, her comments suggest she supports the WTA’s handling of the situation.
Rybakina Expresses Discontent
Rybakina, however, remains frustrated by the verdict.
“I’m just disappointed with the situation and how the process went. I’m not going to comment much on that anymore,” she said last week.
Swiatek and Rybakina recently faced off in Doha, where the world No. 1 secured a 6-2, 7-5 victory. This week, both players are competing at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai, where a potential semifinal clash could see them meet again.
