Iga Swiatek Draws Parallels Between Her Game and Rafael Nadal’s
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has long been open about her admiration for Rafael Nadal, and now she has given further insight into how she sees similarities between their playing styles. The 23-year-old Polish star, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has often been compared to the 22-time Major winner, particularly due to her dominance on clay courts and her relentless intensity.
How Swiatek Sees Nadal’s Influence on Her Game
In an interview with The Athletic, Swiatek broke down how her style mirrors Nadal’s trademark game. The 14-time French Open champion built his success by using heavy topspin, sharp angles, and exceptional footwork to outmaneuver opponents. Swiatek, who has won three French Open titles, sees herself as following a similar path.
“It’s just physics. On clay, it’s going to be a bit easier because my topspin will jump higher, and my movements will be maybe better than what other girls can bring with the sliding and changing direction.”
Like Nadal, Swiatek uses topspin to dictate rallies, applying constant pressure with her footwork and aggression. Her ability to cover the court efficiently and take charge of points is reminiscent of the Spaniard’s approach, particularly on Roland Garros’ slow, high-bouncing courts.
Swiatek: “Nadal is the GOAT on Every Surface”
While Nadal was initially considered a clay-court specialist, he defied critics by excelling across all surfaces. With two Wimbledon titles, four US Open victories, and two Australian Open crowns, he proved himself as an all-surface champion.
Swiatek, who has won two of her Grand Slam titles on hard courts, hopes to achieve similar versatility. She believes Nadal’s success across different conditions cements his status as the greatest of all time.
“Everybody always talked about clay, but he’s the GOAT basically on every surface. Also winning Wimbledon twice. Not every player can have these results even on one surface.”
Although Swiatek enjoys competing on clay, she remains determined to establish herself as a well-rounded champion:
“Clay is where I have the most fun, but I love hard courts as well. I feel like I have my weapons, and I can use them. I want to be an all-surface player for sure.”
Chasing Nadal’s Legacy
With three Roland Garros titles already, Swiatek is on track to build an impressive legacy at the French Open, just like Nadal. However, her ambition goes beyond one surface, and her success on hard courts suggests she is well on her way to becoming an all-time great across multiple surfaces—just like her idol.
