New Delhi, Oct 22 (SportsNews) World No.2 Iga Swiatek is set to make her much-anticipated return to competitive tennis, as she confirmed her participation in the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Finals slated to take place in Malaga this November. The 23-year-old ace, who boasts an impressive record of five Grand Slam titles, has been sidelined since her quarterfinal defeat to Jessica Pegula at the U.S. Open in September, but she’s ready to don the national colors once more.
In an exciting announcement shared via her Instagram story, Swiatek expressed her enthusiasm: “See you in Malaga! I’m thrilled to confirm that I will compete in the BJKC Finals. It fills me with pride to represent my country, and alongside Team Poland, we are determined to give our all on the court.”
Swiatek’s comeback follows a short break from the tour, during which she opted out of the WTA’s Asian swing, citing fatigue as the reason. As a result, she lost her grip on the world No.1 ranking, which has now been claimed by Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. However, the Polish star is eager to make her presence felt again, beginning with the highly competitive Billie Jean King Cup, where Poland will meet host nation Spain in their opening encounter.
The Billie Jean King Cup stands as the premier team championship in women’s tennis, akin to the men’s Davis Cup. Originally launched in 1963 as the Federation Cup, it was rebranded as the Fed Cup in 1995 before finally being named the Billie Jean King Cup in 2020 in honor of the legendary former World No.1.
In addition to her on-court preparations, Swiatek has also undergone significant changes behind the scenes. Earlier this month, she parted ways with her long-time coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, and has since welcomed Belgian coach Wim Fissette into her team. Fissette, who has experience coaching top talents like Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka, will be at the helm as Swiatek sets her sights on reclaiming her top spot in the rankings.
Following the Billie Jean King Cup, Swiatek’s journey will continue as she heads to Riyadh in November to compete in the WTA Finals, an essential tournament that offers her a golden opportunity to regain the world No.1 ranking.
