Iga Swiatek, the Polish tennis star and current world No. 2, faces skepticism regarding her prospects at the 2025 Australian Open. Former world No. 9 Andrea Petkovic expressed doubts about Swiatek’s performance in Melbourne, citing her “anxiousness” and the residual effects of a recent doping suspension. Petkovic noted that while Swiatek has likely worked on improving her game during the off-season, the fast courts of the Australian Open may not favor her style, especially given the challenges she faced at the end of the previous season.

Rennae Stubbs, a former doubles world No. 1, echoed concerns about the suitability of the Australian Open courts for Swiatek’s game. Stubbs mentioned that the courts are expected to remain fast, which could disadvantage players like Swiatek who prefer slower surfaces. However, Stubbs did not dismiss Swiatek’s chances entirely, acknowledging her capability to win despite the unfavorable conditions.

Adding to the challenges, Swiatek recently served a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, which was determined to be due to contamination of her sleep medication. This incident, along with her loss of the world No. 1 ranking, has led to increased scrutiny and criticism from peers, including Australian player Nick Kyrgios, who questioned the leniency of her sanction.

Despite these obstacles, some analysts believe Swiatek can rebound and have a successful 2025 season. Petkovic suggested that once Swiatek overcomes the initial hurdles, she could perform even better than in previous years. Nonetheless, the combination of recent controversies, surface preferences, and competition from players like Aryna Sabalenka, who has been identified as a significant threat to Swiatek’s dominance, may impact her performance at the upcoming Australian Open.
