“ITIA really did everything to try to break him down” – Fans shocked as new details surrounding Jannik Sinner’s doping test case emerge
Recently crowned Australian Open men’s singles champion Jannik Sinner has become a topic of discussion among fans, not only for his recent Grand Slam win but also for a victory he secured back in August 2024. Sinner, the current World No. 1, claimed the ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati in 2024, defeating Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. However, it was his semi-final match against Alexander Zverev that recently drew attention after Italian Davis Cup captain and Jasmine Paolini’s coach, Renzo Furlan, made comments on Italian television about the challenges Sinner faced during that time.
Furlan revealed that Sinner was questioned by authorities for six hours, from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m., on the day of his Cincinnati semi-final match against Zverev.
Sinner had tested positive for the anabolic steroid clostebol twice in March 2024, but an investigation cleared him of any fault or negligence, and no suspension or ban was imposed. The independent tribunal ruling occurred just before his semi-final match. Despite the mental strain of the hearing, Sinner went on to win the match in a grueling three-set battle, 7-6 (9), 5-7, 7-6 (4).
Fans expressed admiration for Sinner’s resilience, with many praising his mental toughness in the face of such significant stress. One fan commented, “We knew he was under pressure, but having to be on calls from 4 a.m., probably not sleeping well, and still winning is INSANE. I had a match recently and played horribly because of stress, and he just puts it aside—it’s so inspiring.” Another added, “Dealing with all that stress and WINNING the tournament—this was his greatest achievement in 2024.”
Some even compared Sinner’s mental strength to that of Rafael Nadal, with one fan writing, “[Jannik Sinner’s] mental toughness and fortitude is in the league of Nadal,” while another stated, “ANYONE would have collapsed, but not him.” Others expressed frustration at the situation, with one fan remarking, “If that’s true, then ITIA really did everything to break him down, yet he continues to thrive. His mental fortitude is amazing.”
In September 2024, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the ITIA’s decision, seeking a ban of one to two years. The case will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in April 2025.
Despite the ongoing doping saga, Sinner’s performance has been nothing short of extraordinary. Since testing positive in March 2024, he has won seven ATP titles, including two Grand Slams—the US Open and Australian Open—along with the Nitto ATP Finals, the Shanghai Masters, the Cincinnati Masters, the Halle Open, and the Miami Open. He also helped Italy secure a Davis Cup victory.
Following his Australian Open win over Alexander Zverev, Sinner addressed the doping case, saying, “I keep playing like this because I have a clear mind about what happened. If I thought I was guilty, I wouldn’t play like this, and that’s it. I just had an amazing run again here, and I want to enjoy this moment.” He added, “I still believe the ruling will remain positive, and I’m not thinking about it at the moment. Of course, there are days when I wish I didn’t have this problem, but I always look forward to going on court.”
Sinner’s confidence in his innocence and clear conscience have allowed him to maintain his focus and perform at his best, and fans believe he will continue to do so as the doping case unfolds.
