‘It’s becoming more…,’ Aryna Sabalenka opens up about relationship with greatest rival Iga Swiatek after they train together
Aryna Sabalenka, the current world No. 1 in women’s tennis, has recently spoken about her evolving relationship with her main rival, Iga Swiatek. The two top players have been engaging in joint training sessions during the off-season, notably practicing together in Abu Dhabi. Sabalenka expressed a desire to foster a more relaxed and enjoyable rivalry, stating, “I thought we have to stay together and have fun and just enjoy our rivalry, not be too tough on each other.”
Their collaboration began at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where Sabalenka invited Swiatek to participate in a TikTok video. This interaction led to further joint practice sessions and fitness drills. Sabalenka noted that their relationship has become “more chill” and described Swiatek as a “really nice person,” adding, “It was fun to get to know each other.”
This development comes as both players prepare for the upcoming season. Sabalenka is set to defend her title at the Australian Open, aiming for a third consecutive victory, while Swiatek will compete in the United Cup in Sydney. Their on-court rivalry remains intense, with Swiatek leading their head-to-head record 8-4.
Despite their competitive history, both athletes are embracing a more amicable off-court relationship, which Sabalenka believes will enhance their performances and the sport as a whole. She emphasized the importance of enjoying their rivalry without being overly tough on each other.
