Manchester City have long been linked with Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz as a potential replacement for the outgoing Kevin De Bruyne. But former Everton CEO and football insider Keith Wyness believes City could pull back from a blockbuster deal — and Jack Grealish might be the reason.

With De Bruyne set to depart at the end of the 2024-25 season, City have reportedly identified 21-year-old Wirtz and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White as top targets. Wirtz has impressed under Xabi Alonso this season, tallying 15 goals and 13 assists in 40 appearances.

However, Wyness told the Inside Track podcast that a potential £150million price tag may be too steep right now — especially with City already having spent a similar figure on Grealish in 2021.

“Wirtz is a huge talent, no doubt,” said Wyness. “But I think City may wait. Gibbs-White could be the better fit at this moment in time.”

Wyness emphasized that replacing De Bruyne is a tall order, hinting that Wirtz might not yet be ready for such a mantle. City, he suggests, could look to ease the transition with multiple players instead of a single marquee signing.
