Jacob Fearnley shares what Alex Zverev told him at net as he wants German to win Aus Open
Jacob Fearnley described his first Australian Open experience as “awesome” and voiced his support for Alex Zverev to win his first Grand Slam title.
The British No.3, who only turned professional last June after leaving college, was defeated 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 by world No.2 Zverev. Despite the loss, Fearnley broke Zverev’s serve for the first time in the tournament and earned praise for his aggressive style of play.
“I think my opponent did a great job today—he’s an incredible player,” said Fearnley, a two-time Grand Slam runner-up. “Massive respect to him. I believe he’s only going to get better in the coming years.”
Fearnley, who required medical treatment for a minor back issue during the match, added: “He was really nice afterward. He said, ‘Great playing and good luck,’ which was really nice to hear. Of course, now I want him to win! You always root for the person who beats you.”
Fearnley, who defeated Nick Kyrgios in the first round, is set to break into the world’s top 80 following his strong performance at his first overseas Grand Slam. “It’s been an awesome week,” said the Edinburgh native. “An unbelievable tournament. This has given me a huge confidence boost, knowing I can compete against some of the best players in the world. I’m excited to come back in the future.”
Next up for Fearnley is his Davis Cup debut in Japan on Friday, January 31. “It’s a dream come true,” he said. “Every tennis player wants to represent their country. I’ve never been to Japan, so I’m excited to go. I’ll probably stick around here and train a bit before heading over.”
After defeating Kyrgios in the opening round at Melbourne Park, Fearnley went on to beat Frenchman Arthur Cazaux in four sets on Wednesday, capping off a memorable tournament as he continues his rapid rise in men’s tennis.
