“Jannik has proven to be the best”: Carlos Alcaraz rejects Mouratoglou’s claim that Sinner is not above him
Carlos Alcaraz Responds to Patrick Mouratoglou’s Comments on Jannik Sinner
Carlos Alcaraz has weighed in on remarks made by Patrick Mouratoglou, Naomi Osaka’s coach, who recently claimed that World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is “not above” the Spaniard. However, Alcaraz did not fully agree with Mouratoglou’s assessment.
Sinner, who recently captured his third Grand Slam title by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final, has been in red-hot form, winning 35 of his last 36 matches. His only loss in that span came against Alcaraz in the China Open final. The Italian remains firmly atop the ATP Rankings and is guaranteed to hold the No. 1 spot for several more weeks.
Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, expressed his belief that Sinner is not clearly superior to the rest of the field. “Jannik is not above everyone; I don’t think he is above Carlos. When Carlos is at his best, it’s a real match, and I’m not sure who will win—nobody can say for sure,” he stated.
However, speaking at his Rotterdam Open press conference, Alcaraz offered a different perspective, praising his Italian rival’s recent dominance.
“Jannik has proven to be the best at the moment. It’s crazy what he’s doing. I understand that people debate who is better between us, but for me and for the players who face him, Jannik is definitely the strongest.”
Alcaraz directly refuted Mouratoglou’s claim, emphasizing Sinner’s remarkable consistency.
“I don’t agree with what Mouratoglou said. Jannik has lost only four or five matches in a year; he has no ups and downs. In every tournament he plays, he either reaches the final or lifts the trophy.”
The Spaniard was also asked about Sinner’s withdrawal from Rotterdam, as the Italian had initially registered for the tournament but later opted out to rest following his Australian Open triumph.
“Sinner’s withdrawal? I understand. I know how difficult it is to stay healthy after going all the way in a Slam. I guess he didn’t feel ready to play another tournament so soon, which was a smart decision.”
With both players continuing to push each other at the top of the game, fans can anticipate more thrilling battles between Alcaraz and Sinner in the near future.
