The Australian has taken up punditry and commentary while away from playing, appearing at Wimbledon and the US Open most recently.

A controversial character, Kyrgios has recently been targeting world number one Jannik Sinner, after the news the Italian twice tested positive for banned substance clostebol at Indian Wells earlier this year – any wrongdoing he was initially cleared of.

With Sinner having swept up a Masters title and a Grand Slam since the news was announced in August, the Italian’s position has been under fire again recently after WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) successfully appealed the verdict and re-opened the case.

Jannik Sinner fans insist Nick Kyrgios will never beat him on ATP return

Kyrgios revealed exactly what he wanted to achieve on his comeback to the ATP Tour, in an interview on the News Corp’s Code Sports podcast.

He said: “I am coming back because something is keeping me around the game. I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles title in a Grand Slam, won multiple titles and made money.

“But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That’ll be my deep motivation.”

Sinner fans immediately reacted to the news in anger, suggesting that Kyrgios will never be able to defeat the world number one.

One wrote: “This will never happen and his jealousy of Sinner will increase,” with another adding: “I hope everytime he runs into Sinner in a grand slam, Sinner will ensure that dream doesn’t become reality.”

Another fan said: “As an Australian I back Sinner a million times more than Kyrgios. He doesn’t have the commitment to come close to Sinner as a Tennis player and person.”

One simply wrote: “Dream on!”

Have Jannik Sinner and Nick Kyrgios ever actually faced each other?

Despite the rivalry seeming totally one-sided with Kyrgios repeatedly criticising the Italian number one.

The pair were set to face at Indian Wells in 2022 but injury forced Sinner to withdraw from the contest before, providing the Australian with a walkover.

Later that year in Miami, Sinner faced Kyrgios in the round of 16, defeating him in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.

Kyrgios admitted he won’t be as friendly to Sinner in the locker-room upon his return to tennis.

With Kyrgios returning to the tour soon, it feels almost pre-written that the pair might meet once more, with the Australian desperate to prove a point.
