Jannik Sinner may be sidelined due to a suspension, but that hasn’t stopped him from making history. The 23-year-old Italian, currently serving a three-month ban for a doping violation, has now surpassed Andy Murray’s record for weeks spent as World No.1.

Sinner, who tested positive for a banned substance last year, initially avoided punishment. However, following an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), he accepted a ban from February 9 to May 4. Despite missing key tournaments, including Indian Wells and Miami, he remains No.1 in the ATP rankings, a position he first claimed last June after Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal from Roland Garros.

Sinner’s Record-Breaking Feat

Sinner has now spent 42 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings, surpassing Andy Murray’s career total of 41 weeks. This milestone places him 14th on the all-time list for most weeks as World No.1.

Murray first reached No.1 in 2016, the same year he won Wimbledon and an Olympic gold medal. His reign was cut short by injuries, losing the top spot to Rafael Nadal in 2017 due to a hip issue.

Chasing Legends

In just two weeks, Sinner will match Gustavo Kuerten’s 43-week record, moving to 13th place. However, he still has a long way to go to catch the all-time greats:

  • Novak Djokovic – 428 weeks
  • Roger Federer – 310 weeks
  • Pete Sampras – 286 weeks

With his return set for the Italian Open, Sinner will aim to reignite his dominance and continue climbing the rankings.
