Doping Controversy: A Dark Cloud Over Sinner’s 2024 Season
Sinner’s doping case became one of the biggest controversies of the year. He tested positive for Clostebol—a banned substance—twice during the Indian Wells tournament. The Italian explained that the substance entered his system unintentionally through massages from his physiotherapist, who had been using a spray containing Clostebol for a personal wound. Initially, the ITIA cleared him, citing “no fault or negligence.” However, in September 2024, WADA appealed the decision, arguing that Sinner bore some responsibility for his team’s actions.
In the end, Sinner accepted a three-month ban, acknowledging partial responsibility for his team’s mistakes. This ruling sidelines him until May 4, but the Italian is already preparing for a strong return.
Sinner’s Comeback: Eyes Set on Hamburg Open & Roland Garros
Sinner is set to resume training on April 13, giving himself ample time to prepare for the Italian Open (May 9-19), his first event back. However, one of the most exciting developments is his official entry into the Hamburg Open, an ATP 500 event running from May 17-24. This will mark his first appearance at the tournament, a key part of his clay-court preparation for the French Open, which starts just a day after Hamburg concludes.
Despite his ban, Sinner remains the World No. 1 with 10,330 ATP points. However, missing tournaments like Indian Wells, Miami Open, Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, and Madrid Open cost him 1,600 ranking points. The Hamburg Open’s 500 points could be crucial in maintaining his top spot.
New Management, Fresh Start
Along with his return to competition, Sinner is also undergoing a major shift in his management team. On March 17, he announced his decision to part ways with his long-time agent, Lawrence Frankopan, after five years with StarWing Sports. He has now joined AVIMA Sports & Business Management, led by Alex Vittur.
Frankopan expressed gratitude for his time with Sinner, stating:
“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a talent like Jannik and proud of what we achieved together.”
Sinner also shared his appreciation, saying:
