Jannik Sinner is set to make his highly anticipated return to competition today as he faces Mariano Navone in the opening round of the Italian Open. The 23-year-old has not played a competitive match since his triumph at the Australian Open in January, having served a three-month suspension for a doping violation.
Sinner was banned in February after trace amounts of clostebol—a prohibited substance—were detected in his system. He maintained the positive test resulted from accidental contamination, explaining that his physio had unknowingly transferred the substance while treating a minor injury. After cooperating with the investigation, Sinner reached a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), agreeing to a three-month absence from the sport.
