Sinner’s Absence Opens Door for Rivals, But Challenges Remain
Jannik Sinner, currently holding the ATP No. 1 spot for his 38th week, will be sidelined until May due to his WADA agreement. This creates an opportunity for Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev to close the gap in the rankings.
Sinner’s suspension means he’ll miss four key Masters 1000 events. However, Alcaraz and Zverev failed to capitalize on recent opportunities, hindering their pursuit.
Both were top seeds in Doha and Rio ATP 500 tournaments, respectively, but neither reached the semi-finals, missing crucial points. Sinner will lose 1600 points during his absence, returning with 9730.
Alcaraz, trailing by 3600 points and defending 1400 at Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid, needs exceptional performances at all four Masters 1000 events and Barcelona to challenge Sinner.
Zverev, 3000 points behind and defending 850 points in the same period, is in a stronger position. A victory in Acapulco this week would significantly boost his chances of reaching No. 1 for the first time.
Alcaraz squandered a chance in Doha, losing to Jiri Lehecka after leading 4-2 in the final set. Zverev suffered a similar setback in Rio, falling to Francisco Comesana despite leading in the decisive set.
These missed opportunities highlight the challenges Alcaraz and Zverev face in overtaking Sinner, despite his enforced absence.
