Jasmine Paolini has yet to find her rhythm in singles this season, but her doubles performances continue to impress.

The WTA world No. 4 withdrew from the Adelaide International earlier this year but recovered in time for the Australian Open. However, her singles campaign in Melbourne ended in the third round with a loss to 28th seed Elina Svitolina, followed by a second-round exit in women’s doubles alongside partner Sara Errani.

Despite that setback, the Italian duo bounced back in spectacular fashion, claiming the Qatar Open doubles title. But Paolini’s singles woes persisted—she was eliminated in the round of 16 at both the Qatar Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships, falling to Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin, respectively.

Paolini Withdraws from Dubai Doubles, Addresses Injury Concern

Paolini had intended to continue competing in Dubai’s doubles draw with Errani, but an ankle injury sustained during her match against Kenin forced her to withdraw.

Announcing the decision on X, she wrote:
“Sorry, I had to withdraw from Dubai. It’s frustrating, but the right decision. I don’t think it’s too serious, but I’ll get it checked out as soon as possible and hopefully be back soon. Thanks for all the support, I really appreciate it!”

Her early exit marked a disappointing end to the tournament, especially as she was the defending champion, having secured her second WTA Tour title in Dubai last year with a thrilling comeback victory over Anna Kalinskaya (4-6, 7-5, 7-5).

A Tournament of Upsets in Dubai

Paolini’s defeat was just one of several surprising results at the Dubai Tennis Championships. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka crashed out against unseeded Clara Tauson, while world No. 5 Jessica Pegula was upset by Linda Noskova. World No. 9 Emma Navarro also suffered a shock defeat to Sorana Cirstea.

What’s Next for Paolini?

Paolini has committed to competing at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in April, but she will be eager to recover in time for key tournaments in the lead-up. With strong performances in doubles and the potential for a comeback in singles, the Italian remains a player to watch in the coming months.
