Jasmine Paolini provides fitness update ahead of Rome Masters after suffering from illness in Madrid
Italian star Jasmine Paolini has provided a fitness update after a disappointing third-round loss at the Madrid Open, revealing she was battling illness during the tournament.
Paolini, currently ranked world No. 6, started strong in Madrid with a commanding win over Katie Boulter but fell 6-2, 6-1 to former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari in just 81 minutes. The loss raised concerns among fans, many of whom questioned her form during the match.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Paolini explained that she had not been feeling well in the days leading up to the match but is now recovering and looking ahead to the Italian Open.
“Madrid wasn’t ideal for me health-wise the last few days, but I’m feeling much better now,” Paolini wrote. “Recharging and getting ready for Rome now—can’t wait to go to Italy! Thanks so much for all the support, and big thanks to the tournament team here in Madrid.”
The 2024 Roland Garros and Wimbledon finalist made a strong start to the 2025 season with a semifinal run in Miami but has recently transitioned to a new coaching setup. Paolini ended a decade-long partnership with her former coach and is now working with Marc Lopez for the clay court swing.
Despite her doubles success in Rome—winning the title with partner Sara Errani in 2024—Paolini has struggled in singles at her home tournament. She has never advanced past the second round in five previous main draw appearances. This year, however, as a top seed, she receives a first-round bye and will only need one win to achieve a personal best in Rome.
The WTA main draw at the Italian Open begins on Tuesday, May 6, followed by the ATP event, which marks the return of Jannik Sinner.
