Jasmine Paolini didn’t hesitate when asked which player she’d like to have as a coach, quickly naming Rafael Nadal as her ideal mentor.

While in Miami for the WTA 1000 tournament, Paolini joined Caroline Garcia, Elena Rybakina, and Maria Sakkari for a podcast discussion. During the episode, they were asked about the possibility of coaching in the future and whether there was a player they’d love to work with.

“Me? Rafa, definitely,” Paolini responded on the Tennis Insider Club podcast.

The 29-year-old Italian, who reached two Grand Slam finals in 2024, is open to hiring a former player as a coach but doesn’t envision herself stepping into the role of a coach.

“I don’t see myself coaching. You never know, but I don’t think so,” Paolini admitted.

Paolini Part Ways with Longtime Coach Renzo Furlan

In an interesting turn of events, Paolini also announced that she had ended her 10-year partnership with her coach, Renzo Furlan, on the same day she shared her admiration for Nadal.

“Renzo has been such an important part of my growth, both as a player and as a person,” Paolini said in a statement. “Everything I’ve learned from him will stay with me and continue to guide me in this new chapter. He’ll always be an important person in my life.”

Paolini expressed immense gratitude for Furlan’s support, especially considering the sacrifices he made being away from his family. “I have so much respect and appreciation for him, for his professionalism, his passion, and the values he’s passed on to me over all these years.”

Could Nadal Join Paolini’s Team?

While Paolini would clearly welcome Nadal into her team, it’s unlikely that the Spanish tennis legend would take on a coaching role at this stage. Since retiring, Nadal has focused on his family and his academy.

In late 2024, Nadal did leave the door open for coaching in the future, though he mentioned that if he were to do so, it would likely be years after his playing career has ended.

Paolini’s potential partnership with Nadal remains a dream for now, but her continued growth on the court is something fans will surely be watching closely.
