Coco and Jez will focus on their respective women’s singles matches; both explained that doubles is not a priority, especially after the disappointments of Paris Olympics, in all specialties actually.

I know Coco is not really interested in playing, or at least I am not, we are not thinking about playing, so I will probably go easy on doubles for the rest of the year. For me, I’m not sure. I think I will play maybe when I feel like it! And maybe I will just focus on singles for the rest of the year,” said Pegula.

Coco had already announced that she would not play doubles in Cincinnati and the US Open, wanting to focus on singles in this phase to hunt for important results.

“The goal was just to try to be as good as I can for the Olympics and then, yeah. Every week, week after week, I get to the end of the week, if I play singles and doubles I’m usually there in the semifinals at least in one event. I’m not playing doubles. It’s tough going week after week on the Tour, that’s why. But maybe next year I’ll play here and there. I won’t play doubles as consistently as I have in the past,” explained Coco.

Gauff also said, analyzing her presence in Toronto after the Paris Olympics: “I felt the mental and physical tiredness of having played the Olympic event and coming here immediately after. Maybe I shouldn’t have played this tournament but I wanted to test myself” are the words of the 20-year-old born in Atlanta. It’s not enough for me to stay in the top-10, it’s not a big goal for me. I want to win big tournaments. I knew that the match would be more difficult, even more so knowing that I wasn’t in the best condition. I had my chances but I immediately got frustrated and started making mistakes. I had the feeling that many of my mistakes were on shots that I think are more my strong point, in fact I think I missed a lot of backhands.”
