Jessica Pegula Blasts ITIA for Simona Halep’s Early Retirement
Jessica Pegula has expressed strong criticism of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), blaming the organization for contributing to Simona Halep’s retirement at just 32 years old. Pegula claims that ITIA’s arbitrary and harsh handling of anti-doping cases has led to inconsistent punishments across the tennis world, citing the vastly different outcomes for Halep and Jannik Sinner.
Pegula remarked that the ITIA holds so much power that it could destroy a player’s career, which she believes is exactly what happened to Halep. The American player is calling for changes, as she feels the current system lacks fairness and logic.
“I feel they have so much power that they can destroy someone’s career, and I think something needs to be done about it because it seems extremely unfair. I don’t think any of the players trust this process at the moment. In recent years, it seems that there is no logic in their decisions, so I am not at all surprised that suddenly there is an understanding, because that seems to have been their way of operating,” said Pegula, drawing a comparison between Halep’s and Sinner’s cases.
In Halep’s case, she was suspended for four years after testing positive for Roxadustat in 2022, a decision later reduced to just nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS). On the other hand, Jannik Sinner was exonerated by the ITIA despite testing positive for a banned substance, later agreeing to a three-month suspension after an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The disparity in how these two cases were handled has sparked anger in the tennis world, especially since Halep’s suspension and the subsequent emotional toll on her career led to her forced retirement in February 2025.
Halep, who was once a dominant force in tennis, claimed two Grand Slam titles—Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019—and spent 64 weeks as world No. 1. But her career was marred after the positive test at the 2022 US Open, marking the beginning of a long, difficult period.
Despite returning to tennis in March 2024, following an 18-month suspension, Halep has struggled with her form, winning only one match since her return, a victory over Arina Rodionova in Hong Kong in October 2024.
