Jessica Pegula may be one of the top competitors on the WTA Tour, but off the court, she’s immersing herself in a new passion—gaming—and turning to fellow American star Taylor Fritz for some expert advice.
The 31-year-old, who recently reached back-to-back finals in Miami and Charleston, has taken a liking to Call of Duty Mobile, even partnering with the game for their Make It Mythic campaign. But when it came time to upgrade her gaming setup, Pegula looked no further than Fritz.
“I usually go to him for gaming advice, especially for traveling,” Pegula told Tennis Channel after defeating Danielle Collins in Charleston. “I asked him: ‘What’s the best gaming laptop?’ He travels a lot with his setup, so I trust his opinion.”
Despite her growing enthusiasm, Pegula admitted she’s currently being outplayed by her sister, Kelly, in their Call of Duty matches.
“Kelly definitely logs more hours than I do. We’ve been on Call of Duty for a while. We took a break, but now we’re back at it on the PS5. Honestly, she’s been beating me lately—I need to step up my game.”
When asked what superpower she’d want on the tennis court, Pegula didn’t hesitate.
“Super speed,” she said. “I thought about flying, but speed would be way more useful on the court.”
Pegula will need every bit of that metaphorical speed when she faces Sofia Kenin in the Charleston Open final, as she continues to build momentum heading into the clay-court swing and the French Open next month.
