World No. 5 Jessica Pegula recently offered her thoughts on the Charleston Open, a tournament owned by Ben Navarro — billionaire businessman and father of fellow American tennis player Emma Navarro.
Speaking during an on-court interview, Pegula praised the event’s atmosphere and hospitality:
“I think the fans and just the hospitality of everything makes it feel kind of like you’re just playing at home, which I really like,” said Pegula. “I haven’t had a ton of free time, maybe tonight I’ll get to venture off a little bit. But it’s fun. We know the city so well, too.”
Pegula, who has become a regular presence at the tournament, added that recent off-court memories have made her feel even more connected to the location.
“I was hanging out with Jen Brady the other night because we were just here for Madi’s wedding, which seems like not that long ago. So it feels like we were just here, kind of exploring the city. It feels nice.”
Looking ahead to her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova, Pegula emphasized the importance of variety and aggression on clay courts:
“I think I’m going to have to be aggressive and show some variety, especially on clay, against someone like Ekaterina who hits a really clean ball. I’ll do my best, and hopefully—like in Miami where I had three semis before making the final—I can finally break through here. Third time’s the charm.”
Alexandrova currently leads their head-to-head 2-1, making their upcoming encounter one to watch.
