Jessica Pegula sparks concern at the Miami Open after suffering an injury that forced her to retire from doubles match
Jessica Pegula’s Miami Open Future in Doubt After Injury Setback
Jessica Pegula has sparked concerns over her Miami Open campaign despite staging a comeback victory against Anna Kalinskaya to secure a spot in the last 16 for the fifth consecutive year.
The American No. 1 is part of a strong U.S. presence in the tournament, with five American players reaching the fourth round. However, her doubles match alongside Ashlyn Krueger took an unexpected turn, raising doubts about her ability to continue in the singles draw.
Injury Forces Pegula to Retire from Doubles Match
Pegula and Krueger had taken an early 3-1 lead against Fang-Hsien Wu and Xinyu Jiang, but after a medical timeout, Pegula made the difficult decision to retire from the match.
A right thigh injury was cited as the cause, putting her next singles match in jeopardy.
“Jessica Pegula had to retire from her doubles match (four games in) due to a right thigh injury,” reported the TennisONE App.
This latest setback follows a leg injury that forced Pegula to withdraw from the WTA Finals last year, raising further concerns about her long-term fitness.
Next Match: Pegula vs. Marta Kostyuk
Pegula is scheduled to face Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round on Monday, March 24, at the Butch Buchholz Court. She holds a winning record over the Ukrainian, but Kostyuk won their most recent meeting on the hard courts of San Diego last year.
With fitness concerns looming, all eyes will be on Pegula to see if she can overcome her latest setback and continue her Miami Open campaign.
