Nick Kyrgios has made it clear that he won’t stay silent about what he views as a serious issue in tennis—his criticism of Jannik Sinner over recent doping allegations. The outspoken Australian tennis star, known for his fiery personality and controversial comments, has ramped up his criticism of Sinner, labeling the Italian’s actions as “disrespectful” to the sport and the integrity of competition.
Kyrgios initially spoke out following the news that both Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek had been flagged by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for doping violations in 2024. While both players faced mild punishments due to claims that the banned substances found in their systems were from contaminated medications, Kyrgios has remained unsatisfied with the explanation and the tennis world’s handling of the situation.
In a recent interview, Kyrgios explained why he refuses to be silenced on the matter, especially regarding Sinner.
“I’ve been around this sport long enough to know when something just doesn’t sit right,” Kyrgios stated. “To me, it’s not just about the banned substances, it’s about respect for the game and your fellow competitors. What Sinner did was disrespectful to the sport, and I’m not going to keep quiet about it.”
Kyrgios believes that regardless of the circumstances surrounding Sinner’s doping case, the fact remains that the world number one tested positive for a banned substance, and that should not be overlooked.
“When you’re at the top of the game, people look up to you. The kids, the fans, everyone watches what you do. If you’re found with something in your system, intentional or not, it’s a slap in the face to everyone who’s competing clean,” Kyrgios continued. “I’ve worked too hard, battled through injuries, and stayed true to the process to just let this slide.”
The Australian also voiced his frustration over what he perceives as leniency from tennis authorities in cases involving high-profile players like Sinner. Kyrgios argues that top players are being shielded, and the sport’s integrity is being compromised as a result.
“If it were anyone else, would they have gotten off so easily? That’s the question. I’m not here to attack Jannik personally, but the fact is, the rules should be the same for everyone, no matter who you are. It’s not right that some players get treated differently,” Kyrgios said.
Kyrgios’ strong stance comes at a time when he’s preparing for his return to competitive tennis after a lengthy injury absence. As he gears up for the Brisbane International, the Australian has shown no intention of softening his views on the matter.
“I’m not going to shut up about it just because some people don’t like what I have to say,” Kyrgios said. “This is about protecting the sport and making sure everyone competes on a level playing field. That’s what it comes down to—respect for the game.”
Kyrgios’ remarks have once again stirred debate within the tennis community about doping, accountability, and how the sport’s governing bodies should handle violations, especially when it involves some of the biggest names in the game.
