Ferrari Team Radio Controversy as Leclerc Questions Swap with Hamilton
Team radio communication at Ferrari was once again a hot topic during Sprint qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix, as Charles Leclerc expressed confusion over a late instruction to swap positions with teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Leclerc Questions Ferrari’s Call
During the final SQ2 outlap, Leclerc was asked to let Hamilton through—a request that clearly caught him off guard.
“Can we swap the cars, please,” came the message from Ferrari.
A surprised Leclerc responded, “Swap the cars now?” After receiving confirmation, he reluctantly agreed but added, “Yeah, I’ll do it, but we’ve never done that, and I’m a bit in the sh*t as well.”
Despite both Ferrari drivers advancing to SQ3, Leclerc ended up nearly two-tenths slower than Hamilton. Ultimately, Hamilton went on to secure his first pole position in Ferrari colors, setting the stage for a thrilling Sprint race with Max Verstappen alongside him on the front row.
Leclerc Acknowledges Hamilton’s Pace
Leclerc, who had to settle for P4, admitted that Hamilton simply had the edge over him.
“I struggled on my side of the garage,” he explained. “From the beginning, I felt like I was a step back compared to Lewis—he was just faster today.
“I had a tough time through Turns 1, 2, and 3, similar to my struggles last year, which is frustrating. Everything else was quite tight, so it’s a shame to start P4.
“But Lewis is on the ball, and hopefully, we can have a good race together tomorrow.”
Hamilton’s Pole Validates Ferrari Move
Hamilton’s strong performance in Shanghai marks a major step forward following a challenging Ferrari debut in Melbourne. His pole position has already sparked discussions about the impact of his blockbuster switch from Mercedes.
Sky Sports F1 pundit Karun Chandhok believes this result underscores why Ferrari brought Hamilton on board.
“That’s why Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton,” Chandhok said. “They wanted his star quality, but more importantly, they signed him to deliver on track.
“For Charles, it’s a great challenge. Carlos [Sainz] was tough competition, but Lewis raises the bar even higher.
“We didn’t get the fairytale moment in Melbourne of Lewis starting his Ferrari journey at the top—but we only had to wait six days to see it happen here.
“This proves his move was justified. He looks reenergized, reinvigorated, and most importantly, he delivered on the timesheets today.”
As the F1 season progresses, all eyes will be on the evolving dynamic between Hamilton and Leclerc, as Ferrari fights to reclaim championship glory.
