Jannik Sinner: A Champion Who Never Forgets His Roots
Jannik Sinner has firmly established himself as a tennis champion, yet he remains deeply connected to his roots, often returning to Val Pusteria to ski whenever he gets the chance. Following his second consecutive Australian Open triumph, the world No.1 was spotted skiing near his hometown with a group of children. However, these images stirred controversy among some fans, as Sinner had opted not to travel to Rome to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
Sinner’s love for skiing is well known. As a child, he was a promising skier before committing to tennis, and he shares a strong friendship with legendary skier Lindsey Vonn. The 40-year-old American recently made a remarkable return to competition after nearly six years in retirement, proving she can still perform at an elite level.
In an interview with Repubblica, Vonn spoke about her bond with the three-time Grand Slam champion:
“I’m in frequent contact with Jannik; we are very good friends. The other day, he was skiing at Plan de Corones, but unfortunately, we couldn’t meet. I’m sure we’ll ski together again sooner or later.
Right now, he’s fully focused on tennis and winning trophies, while I have other priorities as well. But one day, we will cross paths again.”
Sinner Takes a Well-Deserved Break
After his triumph in Australia, the 23-year-old from Sesto Pusteria is taking some time off and has chosen not to defend his title in Rotterdam this week. His next appearance will be at the prestigious ATP 500 event in Doha later this month, where he will compete alongside Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
As the current world No.1, Sinner already holds a commanding lead in the ATP rankings. He will have the opportunity to extend his advantage in Indian Wells, as the 400 points he earned there in 2024 were removed due to a doping case ruling.
Sinner’s best result in Indian Wells so far has been reaching the semifinals, where he has fallen to Alcaraz in the last two editions. This year, he will aim to go even further.
