Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, a decision that has sent ripples through the tennis world. The World No. 3, who was hopeful about competing in his home country, has been forced to step aside due to a lingering adductor injury in his right leg—sustained during his run in Barcelona.

The four-time Grand Slam champion underwent several tests in recent days, ultimately deciding to prioritize recovery with the French Open fast approaching. Despite initial optimism, Alcaraz never began training at the Caja Mágica, and updates over the past 24 hours confirmed his withdrawal.

The 21-year-old Spaniard has previously won the Madrid Open back-to-back in 2022 and 2023. However, injuries have hampered his 2025 clay court season so far—he also skipped the Rome Masters last year due to forearm pain that resurfaced during his recent quarterfinal exit to Andrey Rublev.

Speaking to the press, Alcaraz explained that he wants to avoid aggravating the injury further and will only compete at the Rome Masters if he’s 100% fit. His focus remains firmly on Roland Garros, where he’ll aim to defend his title in just under a month.

Musetti Reacts: “It’s a Real Shame”

Italian star Lorenzo Musetti, who recently faced Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo Masters final, shared his thoughts on the Spaniard’s absence during an interview with MARCA.

“Carlos is one of the best players in the world,” Musetti said. “It’s a real shame he won’t be playing in Madrid. I was looking forward to the possibility of facing him again. Tournaments like these are made even more special by the presence of top players. I hope he recovers quickly.”

Alcaraz’s decision underscores the physical demands of the tour and the importance of long-term health over short-term appearances—even in front of a home crowd
