Luke Littler’s comments were very different from Gian van Veen’s after the pair’s clash

LUKE LITTLER and Gian van Veen struck very different tones after their latest showdown, underlining the contrasting mindsets of two players at very different stages of their careers.

Littler came out on top in their clash, continuing his relentless start to the new season and reinforcing his status as the sport’s dominant force at just 19 years old. But while the result itself was significant, it was what followed afterwards that really caught the eye.

Speaking after the match, Littler was typically calm and measured, playing down the significance of the win despite another strong performance on the big stage. The world No1 focused instead on the process, insisting there was still plenty for him to improve as he looks ahead to the rest of the Premier League campaign.

“There’s still things I can do better,” Littler said. “I’m happy with the win, but it’s about keeping my level high every week. That’s the main thing.”

It was a familiar response from a player who, despite already “almost completing darts”, continues to speak like someone with far bigger targets still ahead of him. Littler has repeatedly stressed that he is not interested in individual matches or statements against specific opponents, preferring to judge himself across an entire season.

Van Veen, however, took a very different approach.

The Dutchman, who has rapidly emerged as one of the most dangerous new names on the circuit, was far more reflective after the defeat. Rather than brushing the result aside, he openly acknowledged the gap that still exists between himself and Littler at the very top of the game.

Van Veen admitted the match was another learning experience, highlighting the fine margins required to live with someone operating at Littler’s level. He pointed to missed opportunities and small lapses that were punished ruthlessly — something he accepts comes with facing the world’s best.

“When you play Luke, you can’t switch off for a second,” van Veen said. “If you do, you’re chasing the game straight away.”

The contrast was striking. Littler spoke like a champion defending standards, while van Veen sounded like a challenger still building towards them.

Yet there was also a sense of mutual respect. Van Veen praised Littler’s scoring power and composure, while Littler acknowledged that the Dutchman is part of a new wave of players capable of shaking up the established order.

Their differing reactions only added to the feeling that this rivalry may have plenty more chapters to come. For now, Littler remains the benchmark — but van Veen’s honesty suggests he knows exactly what is required if he is to close the gap.
