Manchester City’s £59 million signing of Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt could pave the way for Jack Grealish to transition into a more central role.

That’s the perspective of former City midfielder Dietmar Hamann, who believes Pep Guardiola faces a challenge in maximizing the effectiveness of both Marmoush and Erling Haaland in the same attacking setup.

Marmoush, who has netted 20 goals across all competitions this season, arrived from the Bundesliga side last week and was immediately thrust into City’s starting XI for their 3-1 victory over Chelsea. The 25-year-old impressed on the left flank, a position Grealish has often occupied. However, with Savinho also in strong form on the wing, Grealish’s opportunities in that role now appear limited.

Hamann, however, sees this as a potential advantage and has urged City to experiment with Grealish in a more central position to unlock his creative potential.

“With Marmoush arriving, that’s yet another player Grealish has to compete with, making it harder for him to get regular game time,” Hamann told Slots Wise.

“That said, I’d like to see him play in the middle. He doesn’t have out-and-out pace, and in today’s game, it’s tough to beat defenders out wide. But he’s excellent on the ball and brilliant at creating chances from central areas.

“He hasn’t contributed enough goals from the wing for City, and perhaps a move inside could be the solution. Otherwise, he may have to consider his future. Grealish is too good to be a part-time player.”

Marmoush thrived at Frankfurt alongside fellow forward Hugo Ekitike, and Guardiola will be hoping he can develop a similarly productive partnership with Haaland at City. However, Hamann has cautioned that their playing styles may not be naturally compatible.

“Guardiola has to figure out how to make Haaland and Marmoush work together in the same team,” Hamann added.

“Marmoush had his best season in Germany playing alongside Ekitike, with whom he had great chemistry. He’s a player who thrives in a free role, drifting across the attack, but he might not have the same freedom under Guardiola.

“On top of that, Haaland is a more static presence. He doesn’t drift wide or take players on, which could limit how Marmoush operates alongside him.

“In Frankfurt, Marmoush was the focal point. He had the freedom to express himself, and losing the ball wasn’t a huge issue. That won’t be the case at City. It remains to be seen how he adapts and whether he can link up effectively with Haaland. It’s not easy to score a lot of goals next to Haaland, given that he occupies the key spaces where goals are scored.

“But one thing is certain—if Marmoush doesn’t succeed at City, it won’t be because he lacks ability. He’s a hugely talented player, and we’ve seen that in Germany. Football has no guarantees, and he might not fit into Guardiola’s system, but he undoubtedly has the quality to shine in the Premier League.”
