Manchester United Urged to Learn from Darts Star Luke Littler on Handling Pressure

Manchester United should take inspiration from darts sensation Luke Littler when it comes to dealing with high-pressure situations, according to club legend Jaap Stam.

Stam, a key figure in United’s success between 1998 and 2001, believes Littler’s composure and mental resilience can serve as a valuable lesson for the club’s young stars as they transition to the first team.

Littler’s Rapid Rise in Darts

At just 18 years old, Littler has already established himself as a dominant force in darts. The world number two has claimed five major titles, including the 2025 World Championship and UK Open, making him a future contender for the top ranking.

Stam, who won multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford, sees parallels between Littler’s rise and the pressure young United players face when breaking into the senior squad.

A Lesson in Mental Toughness

Speaking to Swedish outlet Makthavare, Stam highlighted how United’s academy prospects, such as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, could benefit from studying Littler’s mental approach.

“I’ve been so impressed with how Luke Littler has been performing. I spoke to him at Old Trafford last season and told him how remarkable it is that he remains focused despite all the noise and pressure at tournaments,” Stam said.

“For young footballers moving from the academy to the first team, the pressure is immense—especially with social media scrutiny. I think it would be great for these players to speak with Luke about how he manages high-pressure situations.”

United’s Youngsters Face the Spotlight

With Ruben Amorim’s side struggling for consistency, the club is increasingly relying on young talent to step up. However, Stam warns that without the right mentorship and support, some players may struggle with the demands of elite football.

“I’ve seen academy players transition to the first team and struggle under pressure. It’s crucial for the club to provide the right support system to help them reach their potential.”

Littler’s ability to thrive under the spotlight was evident again in his 2025 UK Open triumph, which came just days after United’s FA Cup exit to Fulham. Since then, he has continued his winning streak, securing victories in the Premier League of Darts and the Belgian Open.

As United look to rebuild, Stam’s message is clear: success isn’t just about talent—it’s about handling pressure, and Luke Littler is proving to be a master of it.
