Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, is chasing his second consecutive Australian Open title in 2025. The 23-year-old Italian sensation, who claimed victory in Melbourne in 2024, has had a strong start to this year’s tournament.

In his opening match, Sinner defeated Nicolas Jarry in straight sets (7-6, 7-6, 6-1) and overcame a scare in the second round against Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate, eventually winning in four sets. This marks the fourth consecutive year Sinner has reached the Australian Open’s third round.

However, off-court news has also made headlines: Darren Cahill, Sinner’s coach since 2022, is set to leave the team at the end of 2025. ATP legend Mats Wilander has weighed in on the announcement, offering his perspective on Eurosport.

Mats Wilander: Cahill’s ‘Mission is Complete’

Wilander, a former world number one, explained why Cahill’s departure doesn’t come as a surprise.

“I think Darren Cahill has been on tour since 1980—that’s 45 years of traveling,” said Wilander. “He probably needs a break, and when you turn 60, you’ll understand why.”

Wilander believes Cahill has accomplished his goals with Sinner, who has evolved into a complete player under his guidance.

“With two Major titles and a world number one ranking, it seems like the teacher has taught the student everything he knows,” Wilander added.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion predicted that Cahill and Sinner’s professional bond would remain strong beyond 2025. “I’m sure Darren will stay in touch, watching matches and offering advice when needed,” he said.

Sinner’s Praise for Cahill

After his second-round victory over Schoolkate, Sinner expressed gratitude for Cahill’s impact on his career.

“He’s brought so much to my game,” said Sinner. “It’s a huge honor to be his last player on tour. Darren is not just an amazing coach but an incredible person. I’m incredibly lucky and hope we can have a great final season together.”

Cahill joined Sinner’s team in 2022, helping him secure two Grand Slam titles—the 2024 Australian Open and US Open—and rise to the top of the ATP rankings.

Cahill’s Legacy: A History of Coaching Excellence

Darren Cahill’s departure from Sinner’s team marks the end of another chapter in a storied coaching career. Before working with Sinner, Cahill guided several tennis greats to Grand Slam success.

Lleyton Hewitt: Cahill coached his fellow Australian from 1998 to 2001, leading Hewitt to a US Open title in 2001 and the world number one ranking.

Andre Agassi: Between 2002 and 2006, Cahill helped Agassi become the oldest player to achieve the world number one ranking in 2003 and win the 2003 Australian Open.

Simona Halep: From 2016 to 2021, Cahill guided Halep to the French Open title in 2018 and the top spot in the WTA rankings.

What’s Next for Sinner and Cahill?

As Sinner continues his Australian Open campaign, he’ll face Marcus Giron in the third round on Saturday, January 18. With Cahill’s guidance still in place for another year, Sinner has the chance to further solidify his position as a dominant force in men’s tennis.

For Cahill, his planned departure signals the conclusion of an illustrious career, leaving behind a legacy of excellence that has shaped some of the greatest players in the sport.
