Mats Wilander predicts Carlos Alcaraz to remain ‘inconsistent’ for rest of his career after recent disappointments
Mats Wilander Predicts Carlos Alcaraz Will Struggle with Consistency Throughout His Career
Tennis icon Mats Wilander has weighed in on Carlos Alcaraz’s future, predicting that the young Spaniard will remain inconsistent throughout his career. Despite being regarded as one of the top players in men’s tennis, alongside Jannik Sinner, the 21-year-old has faced recent setbacks that have raised questions about his form.
Alcaraz’s Recent Struggles
Currently ranked World No. 3, Alcaraz has endured a challenging stretch, most recently suffering a shock second-round exit at the Miami Open against David Goffin (5-7, 6-4, 6-3). This marked the third consecutive event where he failed to reach the latter stages, hindering his push to reclaim the No. 1 ranking.
His pursuit of the top spot was further complicated by Jannik Sinner’s ongoing three-month suspension following a doping violation settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Wilander: “Alcaraz Will Always Be Inconsistent”
Speaking to TNT Sports, Wilander suggested that Alcaraz’s natural playing style would lead to a career filled with ups and downs.
“I think Carlos Alcaraz is experiencing what will be a recurring theme throughout his career—there will be inconsistencies,” Wilander stated. “He will produce moments of magic, but those won’t always be enough to win. We’re not used to seeing a former or future world No. 1 struggle with consistency like this.”
What’s Next for Alcaraz?
Despite recent disappointments, Alcaraz remains one of the sport’s most dynamic talents. As he transitions into the clay season, where he has historically excelled, all eyes will be on whether he can regain his form and make a push for another Grand Slam title.
