After defeating Alexander Zverev in a dramatic opening-round clash at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, Matteo Berrettini explained why he won’t be reaching out to fellow Italian Jannik Sinner—at least, not right now.

Berrettini shared that although he and Sinner maintain mutual respect and a strong relationship, he believes it’s important to give Sinner space during his current absence from the tour.

“Jannik and I spoke a few weeks ago. We’ve always had mutual respect,” Berrettini said. “Right now, he needs to focus on his recovery and spend time with his team and family. Messaging him today about my win would feel self-centered.”

Despite not reaching out, Berrettini voiced his unwavering support for Sinner’s return:

“I’m happy to offer help if he ever needs it, though honestly, he doesn’t. He’s stronger than me—and he’ll be even stronger when he’s back on the court.”

Berrettini’s victory over Zverev marked one of his biggest wins in recent memory and came during a period when Zverev is struggling to regain form following a rough stretch since the Australian Open.
