Michael Smith is battling against the clock to be fully fit for the World Darts Championship as the former world No.1 undergoes a series of injections in a determined effort to manage a nagging injury that has disrupted his preparation.
The 2023 world champion has been struggling with discomfort in his throwing arm for several weeks, forcing him to seek treatment to ensure he can compete at Ally Pally without restriction.
Smith Refuses to Let Injury Derail His Season
Despite the setback, Smith insists he will not allow the issue to affect his mindset heading into the sport’s biggest tournament.
“I’ve had a few injections to help settle things down,” Smith confirmed.
“I needed something to ease it so I can throw properly. It’s been frustrating, but I’m doing everything I can to be ready.”
The injury has limited his practice time, and several recent performances showed visible signs of discomfort. However, Smith remains upbeat about his chances.
“As long as I can get through the first game feeling good, I’ll be fine. I just need to be able to throw without thinking about it.”
A Crucial Tournament for Bully Boy
Smith knows the importance of arriving at the Worlds in peak condition. After a stop-start season, the St Helens star is determined to rediscover the form that made him one of the most feared scorers on the planet.
The injections are seen as a temporary solution to ease the tension and allow him to play pain-free — at least for the opening rounds.
Fans Rally Behind Him
Supporters have reacted with concern but plenty of encouragement, urging Smith to take care of himself while wishing him a full recovery before his first match on the Alexandra Palace stage.
Social media comments included:
- “Huge respect — shows how much this event means to him.”
- “Hope he’s okay. When Smith is firing, he’s unstoppable.”
Eyes on Ally Pally
Smith’s team remains confident that the treatment will give him the relief he needs to compete at his usual high tempo. The former world champion is expected to test his arm again in the final days before the tournament.
“I’ll be ready,” Smith added.
“It’s the World Championship — you don’t miss it for anything.”
