Jack Draper Expresses Frustration During Monte-Carlo Masters Clash
Jack Draper was seen screaming at himself during his Monte-Carlo Masters match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday, as he struggled in the third round of the prestigious clay-court tournament. After a commanding win over Marcos Giron in the previous round, Draper faced world No. 42 Davidovich Fokina but found himself off pace early on.
Davidovich Fokina took the first set 6-3, breaking Draper’s serve in the eighth game. Frustrated by his performance, Draper could be heard shouting “wake up” to himself, trying to refocus after a string of mistakes. Naomi Cavaday, on commentary for Sky Sports, noted Draper’s intense frustration: “Jack Draper is seething,” she said, while co-commentator Ryan Harrison added, “He’s trying to ignite a bit of fire.”
Despite the emotional outburst, Draper struggled to regain control and lost the first set. However, Draper’s fighting spirit shone through in the second set. After going 3-1 down, he rallied to win three consecutive games, bringing the score to 4-3. Though the pair exchanged points, Draper’s emotions remained evident, as Harrison pointed out that Draper was using his passion to stay engaged in the match.
Draper, who had hoped to make a statement on clay — a surface he’s previously admitted isn’t his “first choice” — was inspired by his dominant win over Giron. However, his clash with Davidovich Fokina proved to be more challenging than expected.
