During the 2025 Australian Open trophy ceremony, Alexander Zverev’s runner-up speech was interrupted by a spectator, who shouted, “Australia believes Olya and Brenda,” referencing domestic abuse allegations made by two of his ex-girlfriends. Zverev, the world No. 2, has faced accusations of abuse from Olya Sharypova, which were detailed in interviews published in Racquet magazine in 2020 and Slate in 2021, as well as a separate accusation from the mother of his child.

Zverev has continuously denied these allegations. The ATP conducted an investigation into Sharypova’s claims but concluded in 2023 that there was “insufficient evidence” to take disciplinary action. Zverev maintained his innocence and fully cooperated with the investigation.

In a separate case, Zverev was fined £380,000 (€450,000) by a German court in 2023 for allegedly assaulting another ex-girlfriend. He objected to the penalty, leading to a trial. During the proceedings, it was alleged that Zverev pushed his ex-girlfriend against a wall and strangled her after an argument. However, the case was discontinued after the two reached a settlement, which included Zverev paying £169,000 (€200,000), without admitting guilt or determining responsibility.

Following the fan’s interruption during the Australian Open final, Zverev paused and remarked, “Wow,” while the crowd responded with jeers and whistles. Once the noise settled, he congratulated his opponent, Jannik Sinner, who had won the match 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3, and thanked his team, the tournament staff, and the fans, saying, “Congratulations to Jannik, you more than deserve it, you’re the best player in the world by far.”
