Top seed Alexander Zverev made light work of fellow German Daniel Altmaier at the BMW Open in Munich, advancing to the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 79 minutes.
The world No. 3 and two-time Munich champion (2017, 2018) showed his class on home soil, winning 17 more points than his opponent and capitalizing on four of six break opportunities. Despite facing some resistance early in the match and dropping one service game, Zverev remained in control throughout.
Zverev was sharp on serve, landing 70% of his first deliveries and winning most of those points. He struggled slightly behind his second serve but neutralized any danger by breaking Altmaier multiple times. The world No. 68 couldn’t match Zverev’s pace or precision, winning only half of the points on his serve and committing 24 unforced errors—many coming from his backhand.
Zverev recorded 14 winners to 22 unforced errors but kept Altmaier limited to just nine winners. While Altmaier managed three more aces, it wasn’t enough to make a difference in the match.
The match started with some early drama as Zverev had to fend off a break point in the opening game, saving it with a service winner and sealing the hold with a smash. He broke Altmaier for a 3-1 lead after a backhand error and held comfortably to build momentum. Serving for the set at 5-3, Zverev closed it out in 37 minutes with an unreturned serve.
Altmaier’s frustrations boiled over early in the second set when he lost his serve and received a code violation for ball abuse. However, he briefly found life by breaking Zverev back in the next game. That would be his last highlight.
Zverev quickly regained control, breaking again for a 3-2 lead after Altmaier’s backhand faltered. From there, he didn’t look back—holding for 4-2 and breaking once more after a lengthy rally to go up 5-2. Although he needed four match points to close it out, he eventually sealed victory with a delicate drop shot.
Zverev now moves into the last eight in Munich, continuing his strong start to the clay season and eyeing a third title in the Bavarian capital.
