It will be Kyrgios‘ first appearance since losing in the first round to Yibing Wu in Stuttgart last year.

Unsurprisingly, the controversial star has remained in the headlines whilst away from the court, with Kyrgios recently describing what he ‘hates’ about tennis.

Ahead of his return in 2025, Kyrgios has reflected on the main reason that he thinks he doesn’t always behave well on the court.

Speaking to Alexander Bublik and Patrick Mouratoglou for UTS, Kyrgios revealed whether he had a passion for tennis when growing up.

“I mean I didn’t even watch it,” he said.

“I wasn’t passionate about it, nothing.

“I was pretty good at tennis, and I just played it, that was it.”

Kyrgios believes that his sudden rise to tennis stardom was a big reason for the way he acts on the court today.

“It was crazy, it just happened overnight,” he said.

“I guess because I got there, and then the tennis world was like ‘No you can’t behave like this’, it was like ‘**** you,’ like I’m going to behave worse.”

Is Nick Kyrgios the biggest star in men’s tennis?

Kyrgios has enjoyed a blockbuster career in tennis, never straying too far from the headlines, but just how big of a name is he within the sport?

In a modern social media-obsessed world, ‘followers’ are often a strong metric to go by, and it’s clear to see that Kyrgios isn’t too far away from the top spot.

Rank Name Instagram followers
1 Novak Djokovic 15.6 million
2 Carlos Alcaraz 6.3 million
3 Nick Kyrgios 4.1 million
4 Jannik Sinner 3 million
5 Alexander Zverev 2.1 million
6 Stefanos Tsitsipas 1.9 million
7 Matteo Berrettini 1.8 million
8 Stan Wawrinka 1.3 million
9 Daniil Medvedev 1.3 million
10 Grigor Dimitrov 1.1 million

Only 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic and former world number one Carlos Alcaraz currently have more followers than the Australian, who is quite clearly one of the most popular names in the sport.

The 29-year-old has amassed over four million followers on the platform, despite playing just once in the last two seasons.

Whether you are a fan of Kyrgios or not, you can’t deny that he is must-see TV, and regardless of his performances on the court, remains one of the biggest ‘draws’ in tennis.

Kyrgios is set to return to action at the Brisbane International which begins on December 30.
