Nick Kyrgios Defends Emma Raducanu Amid Coaching Controversy

Nick Kyrgios has once again sparked debate, this time by backing Emma Raducanu amid criticism over her lack of a permanent coach. The 22-year-old British star advanced to the last 16 at the Miami Open after her opponent, McCartney Kessler, retired due to injury on Sunday.

Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, arrived in Miami after a rough start to 2025, winning just one of her previous five matches and parting ways with coach Vladimir Platenik after just two weeks. Despite the turmoil, she has produced an impressive run in Florida, including a statement win over eighth seed Emma Navarro.

Kyrgios Calls Out Raducanu’s Critics

Kyrgios, who recently secured his first competitive win since 2023, took to social media to question those who doubted Raducanu’s coaching decisions.

People awfully quiet that Raducanu is winning now—where are all the experts at now? Lol, coaches are overrated,” he posted on X.

The Australian star’s remarks add to an ongoing debate over Raducanu’s frequent coaching changes. She is currently being supported in Miami by former coach Mark Petchey, fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura, and longtime mentor Jane O’Donoghue.

Mutual Respect Between Kyrgios and Raducanu

Kyrgios and Raducanu have shown admiration for each other in the past. During Kyrgios’ 2022 Wimbledon final run, Raducanu publicly supported him with a post featuring ‘NK’ and a magic wand emoji—to which he responded with gratitude.

As Raducanu continues her resurgence, her ability to succeed without a long-term coach remains a hot topic, with Kyrgios making it clear where he stands.
