Nick Kyrgios Praises His Comeback from Career-Threatening Injury: ‘And I Did It Without Failing Any Drug Tests
Nick Kyrgios is gearing up to compete at the Brisbane International, marking his return to action since the 2023 Stuttgart Open
Injury nearly derailed Nick Kyrgios’ tennis career, but the Australian star has fought his way back and is set to make his much-anticipated return on home soil. Kyrgios plans to compete at the Brisbane International, which kicks off on December 29, marking his first tournament since undergoing wrist surgery.
On December 5, Kyrgios took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his excitement and pride in his recovery journey. Along with a training video, he wrote:
“Feels good getting these consecutive days training in the bank, man… Wrist reconstruction and back out here… blessed… Without failing any drug tests. Be proud, Kygs, doing it the right way.”
This self-congratulatory post also contained a subtle jab at Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, two players previously involved in doping controversies.
The tennis world remembers that Swiatek and Sinner were flagged for contamination with trimetazidine and clostebol, respectively. While Swiatek served a brief one-month ban and forfeited her Cincinnati Open prize money, Sinner faced a provisional suspension and was stripped of his Indian Wells earnings. Kyrgios has been vocal in questioning the leniency of these penalties, calling out the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for what he perceives as inconsistent enforcement of anti-doping rules.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Kyrgios’ return, which will test both his physical recovery and his ability to compete at the highest level once again. Whether his fiery commentary or powerful gameplay takes center stage, one thing is certain: Kyrgios will make headlines both on and off the court.
