Novak Djokovic’s Emotional Miami Open Tribute

Novak Djokovic shed light on a heartfelt message he wrote on a camera lens after his Miami Open victory over Rinky Hijikata. Written in Serbian, the tribute puzzled many English-speaking fans until the 24-time Grand Slam champion explained its significance.

Following a series of post-Australian Open struggles, Djokovic rebounded with a strong win on Friday, securing a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory to advance to the round of 32, where he will face Camilo Ugo. After his match, he solemnly wrote a message featuring the number 16, later revealing it was a tribute to the 16th victim of a tragic railway station collapse in Novi Sad, Serbia.

The disaster, which initially claimed 14 lives, saw another fatality two weeks later and a 16th victim succumb to injuries earlier this week. Djokovic expressed his grief, calling it “one of the biggest tragedies in our modern history”.

Public Reaction & Ongoing Protests

The tragedy has ignited widespread protests in Serbia, with citizens blaming corruption for poor construction oversight. The railway station had undergone restoration before its concrete roof collapsed. Last weekend, hundreds of thousands gathered in Belgrade in what became the largest protest in Serbian history.

Djokovic, determined to honor the victims, now looks ahead to a deep run in Miami.
