Novak Djokovic issues strongly worded statement as widespread student protests cause unrest in Serbia over tragic railway station collapse
Novak Djokovic has expressed his views on the ongoing protests led by university students in Serbia, which were ignited by a tragic incident at a railway station in Novi Sad. The demonstrations across the country are fueled by growing discontent with President Aleksandar Vučić’s response to the catastrophe.
The protests began after a concrete canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1, killing 15 people. Many citizens blamed government corruption, claiming that negligence and rushed work during the station’s renovation led to the disaster.
University students have been at the forefront of the protests, demanding transparency and accountability. They called for the release of all renovation-related documents and staged blockades at 40 university faculties, halting classes for days until their demands were addressed. Additionally, the students protested against the state-run RTS television, accusing it of spreading government propaganda and alleging that the protests were influenced by Western interests.
Djokovic recently took to social media to share his thoughts on the protests, stressing the importance of empowering young people and ensuring their voices are heard. The 24-time Grand Slam winner praised Serbia’s educated youth as the country’s most valuable resource, calling for understanding and respect.
“As someone who strongly believes in the power of young people and their desire for a better future, I think it’s essential that their voices are heard. Serbia has immense potential, and its educated youth are its greatest asset. What we all need is understanding and respect. I’m with you,” Djokovic posted on X (translated from Serbian).
When the railway station tragedy occurred, Djokovic was deeply moved, offering his “heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers” to the families of the victims.
