Novak Djokovic Confident He Would Have Beaten Jannik Sinner in Australian Open Final
Novak Djokovic believes he would have defeated Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final had he not suffered an untimely hamstring injury. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who withdrew from his semi-final against Alexander Zverev, shared his thoughts in a recent interview with Vijesti, expressing confidence in his ability to still dominate at the highest level.
“I always give myself great chances, I cannot be immodest,” Djokovic stated. “I am an optimist when anyone is across the net, and that mindset has led me to sporting heights.”
Djokovic’s quarter-final win over Carlos Alcaraz was a statement performance, proving he can still take down the sport’s best. However, his injury prevented him from finishing the tournament.
“With the level of tennis I played against Alcaraz, I would have had a good chance against Zverev in the semi-final, and then also against Sinner,” Djokovic added. “What could have been is in the past now, but my level in Australia was promising for the rest of the season.”
Djokovic Still Hungry for Grand Slam Glory at 37
Despite being 37 years old, Djokovic insists he is still a contender for Grand Slam titles. His Australian Open performance has strengthened his belief that he can continue to challenge the next generation of stars.
“This season, I wanted to start with at least a satisfactory level of play, and I think I achieved that. Of course, it can always be better, but my performance in Melbourne gives me extra motivation.”
He also reflected on his competitive mindset, revealing that anything less than a title feels like a missed opportunity.
“People saw my semi-final finish in Australia as a success. Maybe it sounds a bit strange, but for me, considering my career, that’s not what I was looking for or what would satisfy me.”
Djokovic remains committed to the sport, driven by his passion for competition and the support from fans worldwide.
“I still have love for the sport, and the support I receive from Serbia, Montenegro, and around the world motivates me to keep going and strive for more victories.”
With his tenacity and belief intact, Djokovic is clearly far from done. His sights are now set on redeeming himself at the upcoming Grand Slam events—where he will aim to prove, once again, why he remains one of the greatest players of all time.
