Novak Djokovic Praises Carlos Alcaraz’s Charisma Over Jannik Sinner, Sparking Fan Controversy

Novak Djokovic recently stirred debate among tennis fans by giving Carlos Alcaraz the edge over Jannik Sinner, stating that the young Spaniard possesses a unique “charisma” that sets him apart. However, his comments have left many fans disappointed.

Following his heartbreaking exit from the 2025 Australian Open, where he was forced to retire in the semifinals against Alexander Zverev due to a leg injury, Djokovic has set his sights on the Qatar Open. He returned to Belgrade, Serbia, to recover before making his competitive return.

Djokovic Names Alcaraz as the Most Charismatic Young Player

Ahead of his campaign in Doha, Djokovic sat down with Montenegrin daily Vijesti for an interview covering various topics. When asked which new-generation player shares the same charisma as himself, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, the Serb named Carlos Alcaraz.

“When we talk about charisma, Alcaraz stands out—not only with his game, exceptional achievements, and results at such a young age, but also as someone who is very charismatic, a fair-play player, and kind to everyone. And when he loses, he loses with a smile, which is really impressive for such a young man who doesn’t have much experience but acts as if he has been on the tour for 10 years or more,” Djokovic said.

Fans React Strongly to Djokovic’s Comments

Djokovic’s comments sparked a heated reaction online, with many fans feeling he snubbed Jannik Sinner. Some accused him of having an agenda, while others questioned his reasoning for picking Alcaraz.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote:

  • “Damn, Djokovic really hates Sinner.”

Another fan speculated on Djokovic’s motivations:

  • “We know why he prefers Carlos. Everybody knows it pretty well. It’s sad Carlos is being used by his well-known agenda anyway. Hope Carlos’ fans give him what’s what.”

Another particularly harsh post stated:

  • “Really? Alcaraz, the hyperactive manchild, is the guy with the ‘charisma’ and ‘values’ to represent tennis? This is the same guy who supports women beaters and rapists. So, we all know what Novak’s values are. Sinner saved tennis from these types of individuals, and I couldn’t be more honored to support him.”

Other reactions included:

  • “There are more players with fair play and charisma, but Djokovic only names the one he recently beat. He can’t accept naming a player who is better than him now.”
  • “Obviously, Djokovic is contradicted by the score. Sinner is superior in every aspect. Djokovic and the Nolefam are a good luck charm for Sinner.”

Djokovic Aims for 100th Career Title at Qatar Open 2025

Despite the controversy, Djokovic remains focused on making history. After his Australian Open exit dashed his hopes of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, the Qatar Open presents an opportunity for a major milestone—his 100th career title.

The tournament runs from February 17 to February 22, and Djokovic is eager to seize the moment.

“I hope that the 100th trophy can come already in Doha. I’ve been chasing it for a long time, since October last year. But it will come when it’s supposed to. Thank God, I know it will come, we’ll see when and where,” he told Vijesti.

At the ATP 500 event, Djokovic could potentially face both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, depending on the draw. Having previously won the Qatar Open twice (2016 and 2017), he will be aiming to recapture that success and continue building his legendary career.
