Novak Djokovic Identifies Three Rising ATP Stars Who Could Challenge Sinner & Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic has pinpointed three rising stars who he believes will soon be challenging Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at the top of men’s tennis.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion advanced to the last 16 of the Miami Open with a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory over world No. 65 Camilo Ugo Carabelli. Now, the 37-year-old will face Lorenzo Musetti, as he continues his pursuit of a record-breaking seventh Miami Open title—his last triumph at the event dating back to 2016.

While world No. 1 Sinner is absent due to a doping suspension until May 4, and No. 3 Alcaraz suffered a shock early exit to David Goffin, the tournament has shined a spotlight on a new generation of talent—including an 18-year-old Brazilian sensation.

Djokovic Praises Joao Fonseca’s Rapid Rise

Among the young standouts, Joao Fonseca has been making waves in Miami. The 18-year-old Brazilian has impressed with wins over Learner Tien and Ugo Humbert, earning praise from Djokovic himself.

“He’s been the talk of the tour for the last several months, and deservedly so,” Djokovic said of Fonseca.
“He’s an incredible talent—firepower from both ends, strong serve, a very complete game.”

Beyond Fonseca’s skill set, Djokovic highlighted the mental strength the teenager has displayed on court.

“What’s even more impressive is how he handles nerves despite having no experience at the highest level.”

With a growing fan base, especially in Brazil, Fonseca’s emergence is a big moment for the sport, according to the Serbian great.

“For the tennis ecosystem, it’s super important to have a future superstar coming from Brazil—such a big country, big market, important for the sport.”

Mensik & Tien Also “Knocking on the Door”

Djokovic didn’t stop at Fonseca—he also pointed to two other teenage standouts who could soon challenge the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz:

  • Jakub Mensik (19, Czech Republic)
  • Learner Tien (19, USA)

“Maybe because people talk about Fonseca so much, they forget about Mensik,” Djokovic noted.
“Tien as well. These guys are young, but they’re just as good as him. They’re knocking on the door.”

With Sinner and Alcaraz still leading the pack, Djokovic believes this new generation is set to shake up the ATP landscape in the coming years.

As the Miami Open progresses, all eyes will be on these young talents to see if they can live up to Djokovic’s prediction.
