Jannik Sinner Cleared to Train at Monte Carlo Country Club Amid Doping Suspension
Italy’s Jannik Sinner has been granted permission to train at the Monte Carlo Country Club, despite currently serving a three-month suspension following a doping controversy. The World No.1 is sidelined until May 4, 2025, but reports confirm that he can continue his preparation at the private facility, which is not registered under the French Tennis Federation (FFT).
Doping Scandal: How Did Sinner Get Suspended?
The 23-year-old tennis star tested positive for clostebol, a banned substance, in two separate doping tests in March 2024. Initially, The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) ruled in his favor, accepting his defense that the substance entered his system unintentionally via a cream used by one of his coaching staff members for an injury.
However, WADA was not convinced and appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking a two-year ban. The situation took a turn last week when WADA and Sinner’s legal team reached a settlement, resulting in a reduced three-month suspension instead of a prolonged legal battle.
In an official statement, WADA confirmed its agreement with Sinner’s explanation but emphasized that athletes are ultimately responsible for their entourage’s actions:
“WADA accepts that Mr. Sinner did not intend to cheat and that his exposure to clostebol did not provide any performance-enhancing benefit. However, under the Code and by virtue of CAS precedent, an athlete bears responsibility for the entourage’s negligence.”
What’s Next for Sinner?
Sinner’s ban prevents him from competing in any ATP, WTA, ITF, or Grand Slam events until May 4. However, he will be allowed to resume official training on April 13.
His return to competition is expected at the Rome Masters (May 7–19), just days after his suspension ends. The tournament will serve as a crucial preparation event for Roland Garros (May 25–June 9), where Sinner will aim to win his second Grand Slam after his 2025 Australian Open triumph.
With training access at Monte Carlo Country Club, Sinner has the perfect setting to stay sharp before his much-anticipated return to the tour. Can he bounce back stronger and prove his critics wrong?
