Andrea Petkovic Optimistic About Alexander Zverev’s Grand Slam Future
Former world No. 9 Andrea Petkovic believes that Alexander Zverev has everything it takes to win a Grand Slam, despite his heartbreaking losses in major finals.
Zverev’s Grand Slam Woes
The World No. 2 fell to 0-3 in Grand Slam finals after losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets at the 2025 Australian Open.
His previous defeats include:
- 2020 US Open Final: Lost to Dominic Thiem in five sets after leading by two sets and serving for the title.
- 2024 French Open Final: Lost to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets after leading two sets to one.
With 23 ATP titles, including an Olympic gold medal, two ATP Finals victories, and seven Masters 1000 titles, Zverev has proven himself on the ATP Tour. However, his inability to win a Grand Slam has sparked debate about his mental resilience in major finals.
Petkovic: ‘He Has Everything He Needs’
Speaking alongside Boris Becker on their podcast Becker Petkovic, Petkovic dismissed concerns about Zverev’s mental strength:
“I don’t think that Sascha’s problem is psychological because if he had this problem, how could he have reached the second place in the world?”
She insisted that Zverev possesses all the tools to win a major but questioned whether he fully believes in himself:
“He has everything necessary for a great triumph. I am convinced that Zverev has the mental strength, as well as all the shots. The question is whether he believes in it himself. He will have to solve this problem. I am optimistic and convinced that sooner or later, he will achieve it.”
Zverev’s Reaction After Australian Open Loss
Despite Petkovic’s confidence, Zverev’s own words after his Australian Open final loss painted a different picture:
“It sucks standing next to this thing [the trophy] and not being able to touch it.”
“Congrats to Jannik – you’re the best player in the world by far. I was hoping I could be more competitive today. You’re just too good, you really deserve it.”
The German admitted his disappointment, bluntly stating:
“We’re trying to do all the right work. I’m just not good enough. It’s as simple as that.”
What’s Next for Zverev?
Zverev will return to action at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires next week, followed by the Rio Open.
