Darren Cahill, once Simona Halep’s coach, has laid bare the crushing emotional weight the tennis star carried after losing the 2017 French Open final. Despite her long reign among the elite, Halep’s elusive first Grand Slam left her “miserable,” a depth of despair Cahill initially misjudged.

The 2017 Roland Garros final was Halep’s second shot at glory there, three years after a grueling three-set defeat to Maria Sharapova in 2014. The Romanian appeared poised to realize her dream, snagging the first set and a break in the second, only for Jelena Ostapenko to storm back 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, snatching victory from her grasp.

Halep, then world No. 1, was shattered. Cahill, her Australian coach, admitted on the Tennis Insider Club with Caroline Garcia that he misread her needs. Expecting positivity to lift her, he hid his own pain. “I was hurting but stayed upbeat,” he said. “She wanted me to match her misery—because in tough times, misery craves company. She needed to see I felt it as bad as she did.”

His perspective shifted after a teammate urged a new tack, a pivotal moment in their bond. Cahill owned up to Halep, confessing his lack of empathy with tears and a heartfelt hug—an exchange that reshaped his coaching. Halep later fell to Caroline Wozniacki in the 2018 Australian Open final but soon soared, winning the 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon.

Tragically, at 33, Halep retired last month, felled by a severe knee injury. Her saga—a blend of heartbreak and triumph—illuminates the unseen emotional battles in pro sports, underscored by resilience.
