Tuesday morning brought with it the news that competitive eating superstar Joey Chestnut was “banned” from competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest
Major League Eating announced he wouldn’t be able to compete in the iconic event after he signed an endorsement deal with a “rival” hot dog brand, Impossible Foods.
“We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest,” MLE said in a statement on social media.
“…Joey Chestnut is an American hero. We would love nothing more than to have him at the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. We hope he returns when he is not representing a rival brand.”
In the aftermath of the decision, golf influencer Paige Spiranac tossed her hat into the ring – suggesting she’s ready to take Chestnut’s place.
On Wednesday morning she doubled down, with video proof that she’s capable of downing a few dogs in the 10-minute window.
“I have found the video proof. And I lied it was only 6 hotdogs and not 6.5. I might have to try again this July 4th. Thoughts?” she asked her fans.
While six hot dogs is impressive, we’re hoping Chestnut is able to defend his title.
