Paula Badosa Returns with a Gritty Win at the 2025 Miami Open

After a brief injury setback, Paula Badosa made a winning return at the 2025 Miami Open, battling past rising Canadian talent Victoria Mboko in a thrilling three-set match, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6.

The Spanish star had been forced to withdraw from Indian Wells due to a back injury sustained at the Merida Open earlier this month. Now back in action, Badosa will face Clara Tauson in the next round, as she looks to reach the last 16 in Miami for just the second time in her career.

Will Badosa & Tsitsipas Reunite in Mixed Doubles?

Looking beyond Miami, Badosa was recently asked if she plans to compete in the mixed doubles event at this year’s US Open alongside her partner, Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“Maybe,” Badosa replied. “Honestly, when we do it, it’s always a last-minute decision. Our main focus is singles, but if we feel fresh and the moment is right, we might go for it and have some fun. It’s something unique.”

Badosa and Tsitsipas teamed up in last year’s US Open mixed doubles, but their campaign ended in the first round against Giuliana Olmos and Santiago Gonzalez (6-7, 4-6).

This year, the US Open will introduce a new mixed doubles format, with the event condensed into two days during the tournament’s first week. With eight of the 16 teams earning direct entry based on combined singles rankings, Badosa (world No. 11) and Tsitsipas (world No. 8) would likely qualify with ease.

Tsitsipas, for his part, has made it clear that if he plays mixed doubles, it will be with Badosa.

“She’s the only mixed doubles partner I’d ever want to play with,” the Greek star said. “There’s no one else I’d consider.”

A Partnership On and Off the Court

Badosa also opened up about her strong bond with Tsitsipas and how they support each other’s careers.

“We understand each other 100%,” she said. “He’s been there for me in my tough moments, and I’ve been there for him in his.”

She also shared how she often seeks his advice on handling high-pressure situations, especially given his experience in Grand Slam finals.

“Sometimes I ask him, ‘What would you do in this moment?’ because he’s been there before. He does the same with me, and that mutual support helps us both.”

Tsitsipas’ Grand Slam Chase Continues

Despite his talent, Tsitsipas is still searching for his first Grand Slam title. He has come agonizingly close twice, falling to Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open.

  • 2021 French Open Final – Lost to Djokovic (7-6, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 4-6)
  • 2023 Australian Open Final – Lost to Djokovic (3-6, 6-7, 6-7)

With the 2025 French Open set to begin on May 25, Tsitsipas will once again aim to break through and capture his first Major title in Paris.
