Alexander Zverev may have hoped to escape Jannik Sinner after their tough encounter in the Australian Open final, but fate had other plans. Despite his desire for some space following his straight-sets defeat, Zverev found himself seated just one row ahead of Sinner on their flight back from Melbourne. The German No. 2 was heading home after being overwhelmed by the world No. 1 in the final, while Sinner was also en route to northern Italy, close to the German border.
Zverev, visibly emotional after the match, had admitted he was thoroughly outclassed by Sinner, acknowledging that he has significant ground to make up to challenge the Italian powerhouse. In his post-match press conference, Zverev candidly praised Sinner, stating, “Jannik is better than me at the moment. It’s as simple as that.” He noted that, aside from serving, Sinner excelled in every aspect of the game, from movement to groundstrokes to returning.
Zverev compared Sinner’s game to that of Novak Djokovic at his peak, highlighting the difficulty of competing against someone who rarely misses and consistently dominates from the baseline. “It’s very, very difficult to win a point from the back of the court against them, against Novak and him,” Zverev remarked, emphasizing how relentless Sinner’s game has become.
Despite the defeat, Zverev expressed determination to work on his game and try to bridge the gap between himself and Sinner. The Italian’s rise to the top of men’s tennis is being seen as a new era in the sport, and Zverev knows he must improve significantly to compete at that level.
For Sinner, the win was not only a professional triumph but also a financial one for Canadian rapper Drake, who had bet $250,000 on Sinner’s victory. After previously losing a bet on Taylor Fritz against Sinner at the US Open, Drake made a $95,000 profit this time, collecting $345,000 after Sinner’s commanding win.
The Australian Open final underscored Sinner’s dominance on hard courts, and Zverev will be reflecting on how to elevate his game in the face of such tough competition.
